Got Tens Unit

Tweet This

For weeks I have had this pain to the left of my knee every time I kneel down on my knee cap. I figure it's a scrape or some kind of rug burn injury. But when I look down to inspect the area, there is no sign of skin damage or any inflammation.

Cancer, I must have Cancer!!!!! Immediately, I push on my leg sure to find a TUMOR. But I feel no bumps. Of course, it's probably a tiny, fast growing tumor.

I google knee cancer. According to google and people on the internet with my EXACT symptoms I have some sort of nerve thingy going on. Especially since when putting pressure on the knee cap it refers to the side of my leg next door to the knee cap.

Phew. This will just get better, magically all by itself, I hope. And pray. And, also, I massage my knee for the next few days. Except my leg doesn't improve. Also, it feels worse.

My mind briefly revisits the cancer self diagnosis. Then considers a trip to the doctor but that takes time and effort. And she ll probably just prescribe drugs. And I don't need drugs. Because they have side effects, like ADDICTION!!!

"My leg hurts when I kneel on my knee," I explain to Surfstefan.

"Well, stop doing that," he says calmly.

"I already tried that and it feels worse," I say. "Besides, who is going to clean the litter box if I can't kneel?"

TBH, Internet, I really don't like the way he cleans the litter box. And I'm pretty sure the cats don't either.

Good thing LOVE will keep us together.

Then I hear the voices of all the people who aged before me screaming in unison: "YOU'RE GETTING OLD!"

Ahhhhhhhhhhh! It's happening! I'm getting old. I'm almost 50!!!!! In 9 months!!!!!! Internet, I've really been trying to enjoy the last remaining moments of my 40s, but it's hard when everyone around me is all, "Oh my gawd I'm so old! I can't believe I'm turning 12 tomorrow!"

Then logic jumps on my surfboard. The tens unit will fix it! The tens unit fixes EVERYTHING, even getting old, hopefully!

I attach the electrodes to the spot that triggers the pain, the painful area and a couple of other spots around the knee because I can. Then I pump up the volume on the tens unit and sit back and read the news of the day, which is probably the REAL cause of my pain.

Suddenly, I remember I need to start reading my new book which is either, Lilac Girls (because I have it checked out on kindle from the library and I really need to read it before it expires in 14 days) OR Into Thin Air because the bookclub i may rejoin, but never really went to in the first place is reading it and meeting in 11 days 6 hours 5 min and 30 seconds. Or are they meeting this Friday?????

(Continues reading the news.........)

After 20 minutes, I move the electrodes up to my neck because my neck is tight. After 10 minutes, my neck feels better and I'm relaxed so I remove the electrodes, put them away correctly, and go to sleep.

The next morning I wake up, excited to test my knee. I get down on all fours and softly put pressure on my knee cap and my knee feels better. So I put more weight on my knee cap and it hurts more, but it's definitely more better. Yew! Thank you tens unit angels!!!!! Also thank me because I actually thought (remembered) to put it on.

In fact, I'm wearing it now.........I often wonder why doctors prescribe addicting medication rather than tens units for pain and muscular sprains and strains? I got my tens unit in 2011 when I had a surfing accident and hit my head while also bulging a couple of discs in my neck. And the tens unit helped me so much. I actually went to the ER after this injury and the doc there offered me Oxycontin, which thankfully I had read enough about back then to know it was basically heroin, so I said no thank you mother F&*^**&s!

If you've had any experience with a tens units for pain relief let me know. Also, if you're addicted to drugs please get help, now. You can do it! Though honestly it will be hard and take a lot of work. Seek professional help

Beach Fort

We found this fort on the beach while searching for waves. The surf didn't work out, but the fort did! Never look a beach house in the mouth, even if it is a makeshift one.  It was a great wind block!

Surfboard To The Face

Tweet This

Once again as I'm paddling back out after catching a wave, Carmel gets me in the face with my own surfboard, I think. And now there will be no surfing for 5 days!

Many thanks to J.A. Urgent Care for fixing me up on a Friday night!

And, no, Mom I'm not going to have a scar..............

South Swell Summer

Tweet This

The south swell is still pumping so we headed to a river mouth where we hoped there'd be some swell........And there was.

Hubby and I took turns surfing while the boys played in the river.

I was nice and let Hubby surf first, mainly because I had already surfed twice this week, and I didn't want to be a wave hog. When I came in from my session, to my shock and horror I saw the boys playing with someones' precious surfboard in the river.

"Stefan, the boys have stolen someone's surfboard and THEY'RE PLAYING WITH IT IN THE RIVER," I shout.

"Yeah.......that's my board," says Hubby.

"Okay................" I say, thinking if he's okay with I am too. But I was glad they didn't have my surfboard in the river......

Fake Shark Attack Warnings

Tweet This

Surfers truly are rascally rabbits. Today I went to Santa Cruz to surf and the first thing I saw were postings on three separate great white shark attacks the previous day, and warnings that it wasn't safe to go in the water.

Being a surfer in what's known as the red triangle for over 25 years I didn't really take the warning to stay out of the water seriously for several reasons.

One: Sharks are out there.

Two: Santa Cruz is really crowded. More items on the menu, and by items I mean surfers, the less chance of me becoming someone's lunch. Internet, sometimes crowds are a good thing.

Three: I decided to surf a spot that wasn't a mile out to sea and was located inside the kelp bed, since two of the reported attacks were outside the kelp bed. That was enough to make me feel safe......

Four: The waves looked really fun!

In other words, three separate shark attacks the day before an epic south swell began filling in were not going to keep me out of the water. Today anyways.

Trust me, there have been plenty of times I have "avoided" certain spots because of shark sightings or attacks. I have sharkdar, radar for sharks, I hope.

But before I paddled out I facebooked, instagrammed and tweeted the picture of the ominous shark attack warning with the caption "Stay inside the kelp, today, kids."

It was kind of a joke. But since two of the supposed attacks happened right outside the kelp beds I wanted to believe the kelp was my friend, who would fiercely protect me like her own baby.

Ironically, the only thing that attacked me today was the kelp monster. Imagine, a giant octupus with a thousand tentacles wrapped around me and my surfboard that won't let go. (Shivers)

By the way, the waves were really fun and the swell was only starting to build. When I came in my legs felt like limp noodles from riding waves. In Santa Cruz the waves are loooooong!

Anywho, by the time I came in from my session 9 people had shared my photo on Facebook, 7 of whom I didn't even know.

KGO news tweeted me their phone number to give them a call......

And Hubby and my neighbor were both texting me about the shark warning signs.

"Did you see the fake signs," texts Hubby.

"R they really fake?" I text.

"Yes," texts Hubby. And he sent me this link.

The clue was at the bottom of the flyer:

DUE TO THE HIGHLY AGGRESSIVE NATURE OF THESE ENCOUNTERS IT IS STRONGLY ADVISED TO STAY OUT OF THE WATER FOR 48 HOURS OR SURF COWELLS INSTEAD.

Cowells is surf break for beginners learning how to surf. And by beginners, I mean people with Costco surfboards. Not that there's anything wrong with that......

Anyways, I inadvertantly and unintentionally spread a hoax thanks to my need to share with everyone on social media. I felt a little silly when I learned the flyer was a hoax, and I probably should have read the entire flyer, instead of reading only the scary parts, but I'm human.

On my way out of town I stopped in a surf shop to feel up some sexy surfboards.

The person working in the shop, who I'm not facebook friends with says, "Oh hey Wendy, my facebook friend just shared your picture with me. And now you're here, that's weird.............."

It was a little weird......but that's the power of social media to spread information, true and false, like wildfire, which would be a great name for a social network....

All in all it was a pretty good, non-violent trick. Most importantly, there were a lot less Costco surfboards in the lineup during my session.........

Sunshine Freestyle Surfabout 33

Tweet This

Two weeks ago: "I'm never, ever surfing," says Gio. "I don't want anything to do with the ocean."

It looks like a surf contest is all the motivation Gio needs to change his mind about surfing. Thank Goddess.

This was Gio's first time standing up on a surfboard riding waves. Hubby pushed Gio into 5 waves in Gio's first surf contest ever......

Somehow he was disappointed with his result (#5 out of 7 in his heat).

I was stoked he got up and rode waves all the way to the beach. I was a little worried he wouldn't be able to get up at all. Also I happened to be judging his heat so it was pretty exciting seeing hime surf for the first time IN A CONTEST!

Good job Gio!

I LOVE Trestles

Tweet This
I rode my bike to Trestles everyday except for one day due to Mother Nature and her band of Gale Force Winds. The waves were so fun and THERAPEUTIC! I really needed that.

Thank you Trestles!

Also, thank you roommates for waiting for me to come back from surfing each day while we were on vacation. Y'all are patient!

9 a.m. Leaving for San Clemente!

Internet, it's Spring Break. Miracuously, we left for San Clemente at 9 a.m. and arrived by 4 p.m. THE SAME DAY!

We checked into our room, and we were on the beach and surfing TRESTLES by 6 p.m. THE SAME DAY!

Wooooooooooohoooooooo!

Or should I say Wahoo? Since that's where we ended up for dinner after surfing TRESTLES, my favorite surf spot in California.

New Surf Art

I never know who I'm going to meet at the beach. Today, I met an artist, selling paintings out of his van. And I bought this one.

Now when the surf is flat, I'll look to this piece of art for inspiration.

Its November and it's 80 degrees. It seems we're a couple months behind in the weather.

Since there was a lot of unseasonal fog in September and October, which are normally some of the best weather months of the year, this is a welcome change.
